Teenage Abortion Rate

Whereas Statistics Canada used to disseminate data on abortions performed on young women in Canada by the age-specific categories of “[u]nder 15 years”, “15 to 17 years”, and “18 to 19 years”, the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI), which is presently responsible for dissemination data on abortions in Canada, limits the teenage category to one: women who were 19 years of age and younger at the time they had an abortion.

The total number of women aged 19 and younger who had a reported abortion in Canada during 2010 (the last year on record) is 8,961. This figure excludes women from Quebec, as no data is available for that province, as well as women who received their abortions in New Brunswick, Manitoba, and British Columbia clinics, due to the voluntary – and thus incomplete – nature of reporting by clinics.

The total number of women aged 19 and younger who had a reported abortion in Canada during 2009, a figure which does include Quebec, is 14,773. The number for 2008 is 15,622 and 2007 is 15,978. In the last four years for which data is available a total of 55,334 reported abortions have been performed in Canada on Canadian women aged 19 and younger. Since this number only includes abortions which were reported, the real figure, while unknowable, is significantly higher, especially considering the absence of data on abortions performed in Quebec during 2010.

Below is a table detailing the numbers of abortions performed on Canadian women aged 19 and younger in 2010 by province/territory (which does not include Quebec), followed by a table detailing the numbers for 2009 (which does include Quebec).

In 2003, Statistics Canada disseminated data on abortions performed on young women in Canada by the age-specific categories of “[u]nder 15 years”, “15 to 17 years”, and “18 to 19 years”. In 2006, the last year Statistics Canada disseminated abortion data, they used the age-specific categories of “[u]nder 15” and “15 to 19”. In 2006 a total of 267 reported abortions were performed on women under 15 years of age in Canada; a total of 15,217 reported abortions were performed on women aged 15 to 19. The rate of abortions per 1,000 women in the 15 to 19 age category in 2006 was 14.2, a drop of 4.2 from a rate of 18.4 in 2002, which itself was a significant drop from a high of 22.1 in 1996. The rate of abortions per 1,000 women in the under 15 category in 2006 was 1.2, a drop of 0.5 from the rate of 1.7 in 2002, and a drop of 1.6 from a high of 2.9 in 1994.

Due to the lack of similar categories for 2010, it is impossible to know with any degree of certainty how the rate of abortions per 1,000 women in the 15 to 19 and under 15 age categories in 2006 (or previous years) compares to that of 2010. It should be noted, however, that of the 2006 figures, a total of 15,484 reported abortions were performed on women under 19, and in 2010 a total of 8,961 reported abortions were performed on Canadian women aged 19 and younger. Since the latter figure does not include Quebec, it is worth comparing the 2009 total of 14,773, which does include abortions reported from that province.

Teen Abortions
Statistics for 2004

Teenagers accounted for 17% of abortions in 2004, the latest year on record. Girls under 18 accounted for just 6.3% of all abortions. The rate of teenage abortions dropped to 13.8 per 1000 young women, down from 14.4 in 2003. The rate of induced abortions among the teenage population has gradually declined since 1996, when the rate peaked at 18.9.

In comparison, women in their 20s accounted for 53% of all abortions in 2004. The rate of induced abortions per 1,000 women in this age group was 25 in 2004.

Teens aged 14 or younger

Abortions were performed on 304 girls age 14 or younger in 2004. Since 1988, abortions have been performed on 8,092 girls 14 or younger. The total number of early-teen abortions on record in Canada since 1974 is 16,403.

The number of girls under 15 obtaining abortions dropped by nearly half over the decade from 1994 to 2004—from 560 in 1994 down to 304 in 2004.

Over the decade from 1994 to 2004, the number of pregnancies in girls under 15 also declined, down by more than half from 864 in 1994 to 424 in 2004. The number of live births in this age group has also dropped in the past decade, down to 111 in 2004 from 252 in 1994.

Teenage girls between 15-17

Teenage girls between the ages of 15 to 17 account for just 6% of all abortions obtained in 2004. The number of under-age teenagers obtaining abortions has dropped steadily since 1994, where it peaked at 8,655. The pregnancy rate in this age group has dropped by nearly half since 1994, from 30.6 per 1,000 girls to 16.9 per 1,000 in 2004.

Young women ages 18-19

Young women ages 18-19 obtained 10,964 abortions in 2004, almost 11% of the total for that year. Abortion among this group has declined since 1996 from a high of 34 per 1,000 women to the current rate of 25.9. The number of pregnancies among this age group has dropped steadily since 1994, from 29,383 to 21,252.

A total of 589,489 teenage abortions have occurred in Canada since 1974. Between 1988 and 2004, there were 336,026 teen abortions, an average of 21,000 per year.
